Rubber mulch lasts indefinitely. (Its deterioration rates are measured in decades vs. months for wood-based mulches.) No more annual or semi-annual mulch contracts and applications.

This mulch cannot harbor insects such as carpenter ants, ticks, spiders, or underground termite colonies. (By contrast, wood-based mulches provide attractive harboring conditions for termites and can act as their “bridge” to structural wood in houses.)

Rubber mulch compresses but cannot compact – this promotes continual internal circulation of air and cooling of the mulch layer. Contrary to the disinformation – even the black varieties remain cooler than any other surface, except grass . . . . . . on the hottest of days. It insulates underlying soil and root systems from extremes of hot and cold weather.

It supresses weed growth, mold, mildew, and fungus (including the notorious staining “shotgun” or “artillery” fungus). Birds and animals seldom scratch through rubber mulch. They learn that it contains no insects, seeds, or other edibles.

Rubber mulch emits no odor after the first few days applied. The initial scent resembles that of a tire store. A simple garden hose spray wash-down, immediately after installation, permanently will remove manufacturing dust or latex curing powder and restore its luster. After wash-down, none of our mulches stain shoes or clothing.

Rubber mulch has a higher specific gravity than water. Except for the finer grades of special-application shredded rubber, it does not float in heavy rain or blow away in high wind.

Rubber mulch cannot absorb rain or irrigation water — it readily drains water and liquid nutrients down to your plants’ roots and promotes warmth and moisture in the soil. (Wood-based mulch, by contrast, traps rain and irrigation water within its compacted mat, which inhibits absorption by your plants’ root systems.)

Like all recycled rubber products, landscape rubber surfacing encounters its share of controversy. Advocates of wood-based mulches assert that their product adds nutrients to the underlying soil. This is true only if you use pure bark or wood chips directly from the sawmill. All colored wood mulches, and most of the remainder, are waste wood such as chipped pallets, insect-infested fence posts, and carpentry lumber cut-offs. These contain dyes, paints, preservative chemicals, fungus spores, and insect larvae. This is what most wood-mulches contribute to the soil as they decompose. If soil nutrition is your major concern, you’re better off using compost alone.

All of our rubber mulches are guaranteed non-toxic to plants and animals and are non-flammable (see 16 CFR 1500.44). Most manufacturers no longer produce “landscape grade” vs “playground grade” rubber mulch. Virtually all now are certified by the manufacturers* to be 99.9% wire-free, the industry standard. The 99.9% wire-free standard allows a .001% chance that an occasional wire fragment might have escaped the industrial magnets used in production. The rogue wire will disappear in one to three months due to natural corrosion and weather effect. For those interested in 100% wire-free non tire-derived rubber surfacing, we also count JJV® among our suppliers.

* The US government (EPA, CPSC, ADA et al), state governments, independent third-party agencies (ASTM, IPEMA et al), and universities test for fall-impact, toxicity, color-fastness, flammability, and access for the disabled — but not for wire or steel content.

Rubber mulch does command a higher initial cost, due to its complex production process as compared to that of wood-based mulches. But once it’s in — it’s permanently IN – you’ll renew or replenish it only over decades, if ever. It should be considered a one-time capital investment . . . . no longer a tiresome continuing operating expense.

Finally, we are proud that 100% of our landscape products are American-made, by skilled and well-paid American workers.

These are our landscape brands: Everscape™, King’s® , LifeSpring™, GroundSmart™, PRM™, Virginia Recycling®, RMK™, RubberBark™, Rubberific™, Tread-Spread™, Leader Mulch™, and JJV® (for non tire-derived product).

TIPS for Do-It-Yourself Installation. Recommend that you:

First, clear away any existing wood-base mulch. Overlaying it with new rubber mulch is Not A Good Thing.

Next, over your solid underlying surface (compacted gravel, sand, earth, or even lawn), lay down black landscape filter cloth. This fabric allows rain water immediately to drain down from your playground surface. Kids can come back out in a few minutes! Filter cloth is cheap and available in 50 ft x 36″ rolls at the big box stores.

(Never use black plastic sheeting — it will puddle water under the mulch. Or newspaper — it soon will degrade and allow seed to sprout and larvae to emerge.)

Overlap the filter cloth seams by 2″ and make sure to overlap your containment as well (don’t tuck it into interior corners); rolled plastic border edging is both the safest — and cheapest — option for your playground.

At this stage, it’s a good idea to install your playground equipment to insure their solid base.

Spread your rubber mulch into this shallow “bowl” you’ve just constructed. The goal is to creat a “light-tight” environment.

Final step: trim away the excess filter cloth all around your borders. If you do this correctly, you will never see a weed grow in this space. And the rubber mulch, essentially unchanged, will be there for your grandchildren and great grandchildren.

An occasional smooth-raking near the slide and swing impact areas is all the maintenance you need for the playground surface.

In Autumn, a low-power blower can move fallen leaves and other debris off your playground mulch, without lifting the rubber. (Personally, I use my power-washer. But just the vapor stream — not full-force water pressure. Does a beautiful job!)
